  • October 29-31 Peace Colloquy at the Temple. The theme is Children Cry, We Respond! Greg Mortenson, co-founder and executive director of Central Asia Institute will be the recipient of the 2010 Community of Christ International Peace Award. His mission has been to promote and support community-based education, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. YOUTH:

Outreach International Interns are offering a $1,000.00 college scholarship to a SPEC camper (or group of campers) by hosting a youtube contest with their new campaign "Small Change for Big Change" to show what good the youth can do for the world.  For further information go to youtube.com and search "Spec 2010 Small Change For Big Change".

  • July 18 County-Rock Concert (Rotary Park, Blue Springs) at 6:30 p.m. Meet at Zarda's at 5:30 p.m. (214 MO 7 Hwy, Blue Springs). Bring chairs/blanket. Look for Kirk.
  • July 19 Dixon's Chili 6:00 p.m. (9105 40 Hwy, Independence) followed by miniature golf at Cool Crest (10735 E 40 Hwy, Independence)
  • July 26 Culver's 6:00 p.m. (1301 7 Hwy., Blue Springs)
  • July 31 (Saturday) Samurai Chef 1:00 p.m. (12712 E 40 Hwy) followed by a movie to be determined.

YOUNG ADULT ACTIVITIES:

  • Sunday Night Summer Series at the Family Life Center Campus. Come for worship, stay for the fun and treats afterwards. Worship starts at 7:00 p.m. in the campus amphitheater. Overall theme: "All the World." All are invited.
    • Aug. 8 "Shine Your Light" Speaker: Richard Betts. Special guest: Senior President of Seventy John Wight
  • Sept. 10-12 Young Adult Retreat @ Camp Doniphan
  • Dec. 19 Christmas by Candlelight. Young adult planned worship at the Temple. 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.

COMMUNITY:

  • July 15 Moonlight Movie A free movie will be shown at the Independence Square, on the west wall of the Pharoah Theatre located at 114 West Maple. The movie, The Princess & The Frog, will be shown at 9:00 p.m. Bring a chair, or rent a chair for $1. Concessions available. In case of rain, the movie will be rescheduled for the following Sunday.
  • July 17 Project Shine Project Shine provides another opportunity for community members, parents, faculty, and staff to gather together, roll up their sleeves, and put an extra shine on five of our schools in the Independence School District: Central Mission has been asked to provide volunteers for Randall and Ott Elementary schools. If you are interested in volunteering, applications are available at www.OurSchoolsShine.org.
  • July 17 Boy Scout Rummage Sale at Blue Ridge congregation. Proceeds go to Scout Troop for camp fees. Please bring items for sale to the church.
  • July 31 Free Clothing Exchange at Beacon Heights (19402 E Holke Rd.) for grades K-12 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Bring clean, gently used outgrown clothing and leave with new wardrobes for your children. Ident-A-Kid will also be present... compliments of the Independence Police Dept.
  • July 31 from 5-10pm 30 Year Blue Valley Stake Sr High Reunion!! If you were active with the Sr High youth group of Blue Valley Stake during the years of 1978-1983, then you DO NOT want to miss this! We are gathering from all over the world for our first reunion in 30 years! It will be at the Family Life Center in Independence, MO.   • August 7 The Community Mediation Center is pleased to announce a valuable summer class for 2010 - Improving Communication for Intimate Partners. This is a 3 hour course which includes 1 hour of private coaching for couples who want to improve their communication skills.   • Gudgell Park is celebrating its 85th Anniversary in August 2010. We want to collect stories/pictures from our past members/leaders. Special activities all month.   • Summer JAM-boree for children ages 4 to 13 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at South Crysler Community of Christ on the following Wednesdays - July 14th and August 4th. Fun activities, crafts, Christian stories, and music.
  • Free Organ Demonstration Recitals: Staff organists present free 30-minute recitals daily through August 31st. VOLUNTEER:

  • International Headquarters is seeking volunteers to serve as Children's Peace Pavilion Museum Docents. Duties include ensuring a quality experience for all visitors by greeting and educating visitors, answering questions, and acknowledging visitor comments and concerns. EMPLOYMENT:

  • Grounds and Maintenance Manager for the Camp Doniphan Retreat Center. Must be a registered youth worker and will supervise/coordinate the maintenance activities for the campground. Must be familiar with grounds maintenance; risk management issues; water pumps; able to perform general repairs on equipment, lake docks, and roofs; plumbing issues; swimming pool maintenance, and other necessary inspections and repairs.
